Writing a resume for remote jobs
Say “remote” explicitly
If you’ve worked remotely, put it in the location slot: “Acme Corp — Remote (US)”. Remote employers scan for prior remote experience specifically; making them infer it is a missed signal. Hybrid roles: “Hybrid — Chicago, IL”.
Prove self-management with outcomes
Remote hiring managers screen for people who ship without supervision. Bullets that show ownership end-to-end — “Owned the release pipeline for a 9-person distributed team across 4 time zones” — beat any claim of being a “self-starter”.
Name your collaboration stack
Slack, Zoom, Notion, Jira, Linear, GitHub, Figma — concrete tool names are both ATS keywords and instant credibility that you can operate in an async toolchain. List them in skills; better, embed them in bullets.
Show async communication in writing
Remote work runs on writing: documentation, RFCs, post-mortems, runbooks. If you’ve written any of these, say so with scope: “Wrote onboarding docs that cut new-hire ramp time from 6 to 3 weeks”. Your resume itself is a writing sample — keep it tight.
Time zones and eligibility up top
Many remote postings restrict by country or overlap hours. Put your time zone and work eligibility in the contact line (“CET, eligible to work in the EU”) so a recruiter never has to guess whether you fit the constraint.
Tailor to each remote posting like any other
Remote roles get more applicants, so keyword matching is stricter, not looser. Extract each posting’s keywords and check your match with a free ATS score before applying.
A remote-ready summary line
Fold the remote signal into your summary rather than adding a separate section: “Backend engineer with 6 years, the last 3 fully remote on a 12-person distributed team”. One clause converts your whole work history into remote evidence.
Quantify the distributed part
Numbers make remote claims concrete: how many time zones, how large the distributed team, how often you shipped. “Coordinated releases across 4 time zones with zero missed deadlines in 18 months” is a remote-work bullet; “worked well remotely” is not.
Freelance and contract work counts
Client work delivered remotely is remote experience — list it like employment: “Freelance Designer — Remote, 2023–2025” with client outcomes as bullets. Group small engagements under one heading so the timeline stays readable.
What remote employers screen out
Vague availability (no time zone), no evidence of written communication, and resumes that never mention how work was coordinated. None of these are fatal in an office resume; all three are red flags for a distributed team.
Don’t oversell it
If your remote experience is thin, say what’s true — “2 days/week hybrid for 2 years” — and let your async-tooling and writing evidence carry the application. Claiming years of remote work you can’t back up unravels in the first reference call.
The remote checklist
Location slots say Remote where true · time zone + eligibility in the contact line · distributed scope quantified · collaboration stack named · one writing-deliverable bullet · keywords matched to the posting. Run the posting through our free ATS checker before you send it.
